Women's History ALIVE!

Sandra R. Hansen

Sandra began performing in 1989 while she was earning a bachelor of arts degree at Hope College.  Her majors were Women's Studies and Psychology.  Before she began her acting career Sandra had two other careers.  For three years she was a woodworker at Lyon and Healy where she built harps.  Before that she was a mechanical draftsman.  But neither of these jobs were as exciting to her as women's history.

Sandra now has a second business called Art Nomad in which she travels and paints landscapes.  During the last year she took on a third partime job becoming the Internship and Study Abroad Director at NIRMAN, a non profit organization based in Varanasi, India.  This has meant a number of trips to India bringing with her students and artists to participate in some exciting art programs.  In Sandra's "spare time" she enjoys reading, and hiking.  Sandra's family is made up of her husband, two grown sons, one is a chemistry major at Beloit College and the other is attending George Washington Law School.

Description Sandra Hansen brings historical women "ALIVE!" through her original, one-woman plays.
  • In the play, "Chewing Gum Junk Shop,"silliness abounds as "Midge" buys, reconditions, recycles and resells used chewing gum. Through participation in songs, magic, and dance the audience learns about twentieth century American women.
  • "Kate's  Pants" is a light hearted introduction to women's history. Through eleven layers of clothes audiences are introduced to Amelia Bloomer, Elizabeth Cady Stanton, and Sojourner Truth among others.
  • "Civil  War  Women"   is about one of the most explosive events in our county's history. The diaries of an escaped slave who hid in a crawl space for seven years; a woman who disguised herself to fight as a soldier, a conductor on the Underground Railroad, a Southern belle, and a woman doctor come alive.
  • "Michigan Magic" Audiences are delighted and amazed by the magic tricks that help them to learn about five of Michigan's most interesting women. These women, who came from many different walks of life have made Michigan a better place.
  • "Miss Fuller's Letter"   is a motivational play in which Hetty Green, the richest woman in the world at the turn of the century; Marietta Holley, a popular 19th century humor writer; Dr. Elizabeth Blackwell, first woman doctor; and Victoria Woodhull, first woman to run for president; give the fictional Frances a little advice on marriage and college.
  • "Mujeres Magnificas" In this PowerPoint presentation you will meet interesting historical women from all over the Western Hemisphere from Cuba, to South America, Puerto Rico, and the United States.
  • Workshops are great fun as students from fifth grades to seniors enjoy putting costumes on themselves, writing their own scripts, and performing for each other.
